Wombat (Iowa City) / David Standford + John Teske / Ryan Carraher 7 pm doors, 8 pm music $10 (notaflof), 21+ Wombat, formed in 2017 by Justin K. Comer (saxophones), Carlos Cotallo Solares (guitar/electronics), and Will Yager (double bass), is an improvising trio that combines deep sonic exploration through experimental playing techniques, live signal processing, and instrumental preparations with a real-time compositional approach, creating defined structural shapes and contrasting sections. The relationships within the trio are in constant flux: merging into a single sonic entity, building contrapuntal textures, or letting one performer lead as a soloist. Though the performances are never planned beforehand, the trio's music is influenced by their collective experience with contemporary art music, noise, jazz, metal, and drone. David Stanford is a musician and sound artist living and working in Seattle. He currently plays with graphic score group Eye Music, silent movie soundtrack creators Aono Jikken Ensemble, feedback-based electronics trio Gyre, and for the past several years has been focused on staging sound events at outdoor locations such as beaches, backyards, and forests in collaboration with Michael Shannon and Joan Laage. John Teske is a Seattle-based composer, improviser, and double bassist. He has written contemporary concert music for soloists, small ensembles, and chamber orchestras, which have been performed across the Americas and Europe. Teske’s compositional approach balances intentional composition with spontaneous expression. He uses algorithmic techniques to generate scores and musical systems that incorporate chance, variation, and improvisation. He experiments with distilling musical concepts to their essence and aims to write music that can be performed by any ensemble of instruments. Teske’s work has been supported by organizations such as the Seattle Office of Arts & Cultural Affairs, the Jack Straw Foundation, and the City of Seattle. Ryan Carraher is a composer, guitarist, and improviser based in Seattle. His work is concerned with articulating the vulnerability of the human body, the role failure plays in identity expression, and composer-performer-audience relationships informed by kinesthetic empathy. His music has been presented at numerous leading festivals, including Darmstädter Ferienkurse, June in Buffalo, Either/Or’s Spring Festival, New Music on the Bayou, Oh My Ears, New Music on the Point, Charlotte New Music Festival, VIPA, and Etchings.
